As you may have heard, the federal government has entered a shutdown. With so much information available, we aim to provide a clear and factual update on what this could mean – especially for the disability community.
Why is the federal government shutting down?
The shutdown began on October 1 because Congress did not pass legislation or a temporary funding measure (called a Continuing Resolution or CR) to keep the government running.
Has this happened before?
Yes. Government shutdowns have occurred under both Democratic and Republican administrations. They vary in length, with the longest lasting 35 days during President Trump’s first term.
How does this affect services?
A government shutdown can impact programs funded and run by the federal government. Here’s what we know so far:
- Long-Term Care (LTC) Medicaid programs: No disruption is expected at this time. Payments to providers should continue.
- Early Intervention: Services are expected to continue without interruption, thanks to planning by the Department of Education.
- Social Security & Supplemental Security Income (SSI): Payments will continue as usual. However, local Social Security offices may offer limited in-person services.
Some federal workers are being furloughed, while others who are considered essential are working without immediate pay. Most will receive back pay once the shutdown ends.
What’s still unclear?
We don’t know how long this shutdown will last or what a final funding agreement will include. If it continues into the new year, further changes may occur, depending on updated plans from federal agencies. We’ll share more information if/when there are further updates related to this.

Many of Colorado’s federal elected officials share updates or resources. We’ve included links to all of them, but listed Representatives Crow and Boebert and Senators Hickenlooper and Bennett first, as they represent DP’s designated service area.
